The Scope of Addiction: Understanding a Crisis That Touches Everyone
By Scholar Specialized Treatment Services, LLC | 2026
Addiction is often spoken about in hushed tones — as something that happens to other people, in other households, in other circumstances. The reality is far more universal. Addiction does not discriminate by age, income, profession, or background. It is one of the most widespread and undertreated public health challenges of our time — and the numbers make that impossible to ignore.
This article draws on the most current available data to illuminate the true scope of addiction in the United States and around the world. Not to overwhelm — but to remind anyone who is struggling, or loving someone who is, that they are far from alone.
The Scale Is Staggering
Approximately 48.5 million people aged 12 or older — about 17.1% of the U.S. population — experienced a substance use disorder in the past year. That is not a fringe statistic. That is nearly one in five Americans. Huntingtonpsych
Among Americans aged 12 and older, 134.7 million have consumed alcohol in the past month, and 28.9 million of them — more than one in five — meet the criteria for alcohol use disorder. Meanwhile, 70.5 million people, nearly a quarter of the population aged 12 and over, have used illegal drugs or misused prescription medications within the last year. Project HOPEProject HOPE
Globally, the harmful use of alcohol and drugs results in over 3 million deaths each year — including deaths from overdose, related diseases, and injuries. The global prevalence of drug use disorders reached more than 53 million in 2021 — a 35% increase since 1990 — and projections suggest that number will continue rising over the next 25 years. Addiction Does Not Only Mean Substances
When most people think of addiction, they think of drugs or alcohol. But the scope of addictive disorders extends well beyond substances. Gambling disorder affects 1.2% of adults worldwide. Approximately 60 million people meet the criteria for internet gaming disorder. And around 210 million individuals worldwide exhibit compulsive social media use. Behavioral addictions are real, they are clinically significant, and they are far more common than most people realize. Health Policy Watch
The Treatment Gap: Most People Never Get Help
Perhaps the most sobering dimension of the addiction crisis is how few people receive care. In the United States, only 1 in 4 people who needed substance use treatment in the past year actually received it. Among the nearly 29 million Americans living with alcohol use disorder, only 7.9% received any treatment — meaning more than 26 million people went without help. Michigan Journal of EconomicsGmhan
The barriers are both structural and emotional. Among those who did not seek treatment, 75.5% cited believing they should have been able to handle their alcohol or drug use on their own as the primary reason — a reflection of the shame and stigma that continues to prevent millions from reaching out. Young People Are Not Immune
Addiction does not wait for adulthood. Approximately 50% of teenagers have misused an illicit drug at least once, and nearly 47% of youth report having used an illegal substance by the end of 12th grade. Early intervention matters enormously — approximately 70% of individuals who try illegal drugs before the age of 13 develop addictions within seven years. CareatcCareatc
Yet access to care for young people remains critically limited. Among adolescents who had both a mental health disorder and a substance use disorder, 73.6% received help only for their mental health rather than for their substance use — and nearly 28% received neither type of treatment. When Addiction and Mental Health Collide
Addiction rarely exists in isolation. In 2024, 21.2 million adults suffered from both a mental health disorder and a substance use disorder simultaneously. Depression, anxiety, trauma, and other conditions frequently co-occur alongside addiction — each one intensifying the other in ways that make recovery more complex without integrated, whole-person care. What the Data Tells Us
The numbers tell a story that is both urgent and hopeful. Urgent — because millions of people are suffering without access to the care they need and deserve. Hopeful — because addiction is treatable. Recovery is real. And with the right support, lasting change is possible for anyone willing to take the first step.
At Scholar Specialized Treatment Services, we see these numbers not as statistics but as people. Each one representing a life that deserves compassionate, expert, and dignified care. If you or someone you love is reflected anywhere in this data, we want you to know that help is here — and that you do not have to face this alone.
A single decision today can shape lasting change. Begin when you're ready.
