A Crisis Knows No Time.

IF YOU ARE IN IMMEDIATE DANGER Call 911 or text/dial 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline For additional crisis resources, please visit our Crisis Resources page in the Wellness Hub.

If you are feeling overwhelmed, unsafe, or unable to cope — you are not alone. Whatever you are carrying in this moment, reaching out is one of the most courageous and important things you can do. Support is available. And taking that first step toward help can begin to restore a sense of stability, safety, and control that crisis can so quickly take away.

Scholar’s crisis counseling services are available for individuals experiencing acute psychological distress and for the families who love them. We respond with urgency, with clinical expertise, and with the genuine care that every person in crisis deserves — because we believe that no one should have to navigate their worst moments alone.

When Crisis Arrives

A crisis is any situation in which a person’s usual coping resources are overwhelmed — leaving them unable to function in the way they normally would, and often unable to see a clear path forward. Crisis is not a sign of weakness. It is a sign that something has exceeded a person’s current capacity — and that support is needed.

Crisis can look many different ways. It may arrive suddenly following a traumatic event, a significant loss, or an unexpected life disruption. It may build gradually as stress accumulates and coping resources are depleted. It may present as overwhelming emotional distress, escalating mental health symptoms, thoughts of self-harm or suicide, or the sudden inability to manage daily functioning. In every form, crisis is real, it is serious, and it deserves an immediate and compassionate clinical response.

Crisis counseling may be appropriate when you or your loved one is experiencing:

•  Sudden emotional distress or an inability to cope with daily life

•  Exposure to a traumatic or critical incident

•  Significant life disruptions or unexpected events

•  Escalation of mental health symptoms beyond what feels manageable

•  Thoughts of self-harm, suicide, or harming others

•  Situations requiring immediate stabilization and clinical support

"Crisis counseling at Scholar is available same-day, by telephone, and via telehealth — because a crisis does not wait for a convenient appointment time."

What Is Crisis Intervention?

Crisis intervention is a short-term, focused approach designed to support individuals experiencing acute psychological distress or a significant disruption in functioning. It is not the same as ongoing therapy — and it does not need to be. Its purpose is specific, immediate, and vital: to stabilize the current situation, reduce risk, and restore enough safety and functioning for the person to move forward.

Crisis intervention is built on the understanding that people in acute distress need something different from what ongoing therapy provides — they need immediate, structured, directive, and compassionate support that meets the urgency of the moment without adding to the overwhelm. Scholar’s crisis clinicians are trained to provide exactly that.

Crisis Intervention Is:

✔  Immediate — available when it is needed, not when it is convenient

✔  Time-limited — focused on the acute crisis period rather than long-term treatment

✔  Stabilization-focused — restoring safety and short-term functioning

✔  Structured and goal-oriented — with a clear, collaborative plan

✔  Supportive and directive — providing guidance when the person cannot see the path forward

✔  Trauma-informed — recognizing that crisis and trauma are deeply intertwined

Intervention Strategies May Include:

•  Individual crisis support and active listening

•  Brief, solution-focused therapeutic techniques

•  Trauma-informed stabilization strategies

•  Risk assessment and safety planning

•  Coordination with additional services or supports when appropriate

•  Referral to higher levels of care when clinically indicated

Immediate help when you need it most.

If you are feeling overwhelmed, unsafe, or unable to cope, you are not alone. Support is available, and taking a step to reach out can help you regain a sense of stability and control.

If you are in immediate danger or at risk of harm, please call 911 or contact the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by dialing or texting 988 for immediate assistance.

💻  Telehealth Crisis Counseling

🩹  Crisis Intervention & Stabilization

Short-term, focused clinical intervention designed to stabilize acute psychological distress, reduce immediate risk, and restore a sense of safety and functioning. Crisis intervention is immediate, structured, and goal-directed — providing the clinical support needed to move through the acute phase of crisis and into a more stable place.

💬  Brief Crisis Therapy

A short-term, solution-focused therapeutic approach for individuals who need more than a single crisis session but whose primary need is stabilization and the development of immediate coping strategies rather than longer-term exploratory work. Brief crisis therapy is time-limited, structured, and designed to address the acute presenting concerns as efficiently and effectively as possible.

📋  Safety Planning

A safety plan is a personalized, clinician-developed document that helps individuals identify their warning signs, coping strategies, sources of support, and specific steps to take when crisis escalates. It is not simply a list of resources — it is a collaboratively developed, highly individualized tool that puts the person in crisis in the role of active participant in their own safety. Safety planning is one of the most evidence-supported interventions available for reducing risk and increasing a person’s sense of agency during a crisis.

🔗  Crisis Case Management & Referral

When crisis reveals needs that extend beyond what outpatient counseling alone can address — including the need for a higher level of care, psychiatric evaluation, medication management, or community support services — Scholar’s crisis clinicians provide comprehensive case management and warm referral to ensure a smooth and supported transition to the right level of care.

👥  Crisis Consultation for Families

Watching a loved one in crisis is one of the most frightening and helpless-feeling experiences a family can face. Scholar offers crisis consultation for family members and caregivers — providing clinical guidance on how to respond, how to support, how to keep your loved one safe, and how to take care of yourself in the process. You do not have to navigate this alone either.

Crisis Therapy vs. Long-Term Therapy

Crisis therapy and long-term therapy serve different purposes at different moments in a person’s journey. Understanding the distinction can help you choose the right type of support for where you are right now.

Crisis therapy and long-term therapy are not competing — they are complementary. Crisis stabilization is often the first step that makes deeper therapeutic work possible. Scholar’s clinicians will help you understand which level of care is right for you and support your transition between them as your needs evolve.

Continuum of Care

At Scholar Specialized Treatment Services, LLC, crisis therapy and long-term therapy are not separate tracks — they are a continuum. A client who comes to Scholar in crisis does not have to start over when the acute phase passes. They may transition seamlessly into ongoing care with the same clinician who supported them through their most vulnerable moment — preserving the therapeutic relationship, the clinical history, and the trust that was built when it mattered most. That continuity is one of the most powerful things Scholar offers — and one of the things that most distinguishes genuine clinical care from a system of disconnected services
