Disabilities & Behavioral Health

Compassionate, clinically rigorous support for individuals navigating mental health-related disability — at every stage of the journey.

A mental health condition that rises to the level of a disability does not simply affect how a person feels — it affects how they work, how they learn, how they navigate daily life, and how they engage with the systems and institutions that shape their opportunities. Navigating those systems — the paperwork, the evaluations, the accommodations, the claims, the return to work — is a significant undertaking at the best of times. During a period of mental health difficulty, it can feel overwhelming.

Scholar Specialized Treatment Services's disability services are designed to make that navigation as streamlined, supported, and dignified as possible. We provide comprehensive clinical assessment, accurate and timely documentation, and the ongoing treatment and support that individuals need not just to meet the requirements of a disability or accommodation process — but to genuinely heal, stabilize, and thrive throughout it.

Our approach is efficient without being impersonal, thorough without being bureaucratic, and always grounded in the genuine belief that every person navigating a mental health-related disability deserves care that honors both their clinical needs and their full humanity.

"A temporary limitation does not define the full measure of who you are. What you are navigating right now is real β€” and so is your capacity to move through it."

SCHOLAR | Disabilities

Our FMLA, Short-Term Disability, and ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) services provide a streamlined, efficient approach to managing academic and workplace-related health needs. Clients can consult with a licensed healthcare provider who will conduct an appropriate clinical assessment and, when indicated, complete the necessary documentation for FMLA requests, disability claims, or workplace accommodations.

We recognize that navigating employment-related health documentation can be complex and time-intensive. Our process is designed to simplify each step—providing timely, accurate documentation and professional guidance so you can remain focused on your health and well-being.

"Asking for what you need is not weakness. It is self-awareness — and it is one of the most practical and powerful acts of self-advocacy available to you."

Our Disability Services

Scholar Specialized Treatment Services provides a comprehensive continuum of disability-related behavioral health services — spanning evaluation and documentation, ongoing treatment during leave or while navigating a claim, and continued support through accommodation, return to work, and beyond.

πŸ“‹ Clinical Assessment & Documentation

Every Scholar disability service begins with a thorough clinical assessment conducted by a licensed behavioral health professional. This assessment evaluates functional limitations, symptom severity, and the impact of the mental health condition on the individual’s capacity to work or participate in academic settings. When clinically indicated, Scholar’s practitioners complete all required documentation — accurately, completely, and within the timelines required by the relevant process.

ADA Accommodations

ADA Academic Accommodations

ADA accommodations in academic settings are individualized adjustments designed to support students with documented disabilities in accessing educational programs and demonstrating their knowledge effectively. These accommodations ensure equitable participation while maintaining academic standards and expectations.

Scholar provides clinical assessment and documentation for students in K–12 and college settings — ensuring that every student who needs an academic accommodation has the professional documentation required to access it, and the ongoing clinical support to make the most of it.

A Note on Academic Accommodations

Scholar’s academic accommodation services are available to students at every level of education — from elementary school through graduate and professional programs. We understand that the accommodation process looks different at each educational level — and that the clinical documentation required by a K–12 school, a community college, and a four-year university are not the same.

Scholar’s practitioners are experienced in navigating the accommodation processes of educational institutions at every level — providing the specific clinical documentation each institution requires, communicating with disability services offices and school counselors as appropriate, and ensuring that every student we serve has the professional support they need to access the accommodations they are entitled to.

✔  Elementary and secondary school — K–12 IEP and 504 Plan support and documentation

✔  Community college and vocational programs — accommodation documentation and disability services coordination

✔  Four-year colleges and universities — accommodation letters and disability services office coordination

✔  Graduate and professional programs — accommodation documentation for law, medical, and other professional schools

✔  Standardized testing accommodations — documentation for ACT, SAT, LSAT, MCAT, bar exam, and other standardized tests

"An accommodation is not an advantage. It is an equalizer β€” giving you access to the same opportunity that others take for granted. You deserve that access."

ADA Work Accommodations

ADA work accommodations are individualized adjustments that enable employees with a medical condition or disability to perform the essential functions of their role effectively. These accommodations are designed to provide appropriate support while maintaining productivity and workplace engagement.

Our practitioners conduct the clinical assessments required to document the need for workplace accommodations and complete the necessary paperwork — providing clear, professional documentation that supports the accommodation request and protects the individual’s rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

A Note on Workplace Accommodations

Workplace accommodations for mental health conditions are individualized adjustments that enable employees to perform the essential functions of their role effectively while managing a diagnosed condition. The range of accommodations available is broader than many employees realize — and Scholar’s practitioners can help you identify the accommodations most relevant to your situation, document your clinical need, and navigate the accommodation request process with confidence and clarity.

Common workplace accommodations for mental health conditions may include:

✔  Flexible scheduling and modified work hours

✔  Modified or additional breaks

✔  Remote work or telecommuting arrangements

✔  Workplace environment modifications

✔  Changes to supervisory communication and feedback styles

✔  Access to organizational tools and assistive technology

✔  Modified workload or task assignments

You do not have to navigate the accommodation process alone. Our practitioners provide the clinical assessment, documentation, and ongoing support you need to request and maintain the workplace accommodations that are right for your situation.

The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)

Mental health is health. And there are times when maintaining it requires stepping away from work — not as a sign of failure, but as an act of necessary and courageous self-care.

The Family and Medical Leave Act provides eligible employees with the right to take protected, job-secure leave from work for qualifying medical and family reasons — including serious mental health conditions that require treatment, stabilization, or ongoing clinical care. FMLA leave ensures that an employee can prioritize their health without risking their position, their benefits, or their professional standing.

Scholar's practitioners provide the clinical assessment and documentation required to certify FMLA leave — whether intermittent or continuous — and offer ongoing treatment and support throughout the leave period so that the time away from work is not simply a pause, but a genuine opportunity for healing and stabilization.

Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)

Intermittent FMLA

Intermittent FMLA leave allows employees to take time away from work in separate, scheduled intervals rather than as a continuous absence. This type of leave is commonly used for ongoing medical needs, including treatment appointments, episodic symptom flare-ups, or providing care for a family member with a serious health condition.

Continuous FMLA

Continuous FMLA Leave allows an employee to take time off from work in one uninterrupted block for a qualifying medical or family reason. Common reasons for continuous leave include extended illness or injury, recovery from surgery or hospitalization, childbirth or adoption, and caring for a family member with a serious health condition.

"Your diagnosis is part of your story. It is not the whole of it. You are more than any single chapter β€” and we are here to walk alongside you through every one."

Short-Term and Long-Term Disability

There are moments in a mental health journey when the demands of daily work become genuinely incompatible with the level of care a person needs. Short-term disability leave creates the space to step back — fully and without the pressure of professional obligations — so that treatment, stabilization, and recovery can happen at the pace they require.

Short-term disability is for individuals unable to work due to a qualifying medical condition — including serious mental health conditions that require structured treatment, intensive clinical intervention, or a period of stabilization.

Some mental health conditions have a depth and persistence that extends well beyond a short-term leave period — affecting a person's capacity to work in ways that are lasting and that require ongoing clinical attention and support. Long-term disability benefits exist to protect individuals in exactly this situation - during an extended period of impairment.

Navigating the long-term disability process can be complex and demanding — particularly during a period when a person's mental health resources are already stretched. Scholar's practitioners provide the thorough, evidence-based clinical evaluations that long-term disability claims require — documenting the nature, severity, and functional impact of the condition with the precision and professional integrity that insurers and agencies demand — so that you can focus on your health rather than the paperwork.

Short-Term and Long-Term Disability

Short-Term Disability Evaluations

Short-term disability leave is typically appropriate for acute mental health conditions, periods requiring structured treatment and stabilization, or recovery from a significant psychiatric episode. Scholar’s practitioners conduct comprehensive clinical evaluations to determine eligibility — including assessment of functional limitations and the expected duration of impairment — and complete the documentation required by the individual’s employer or insurance provider with accuracy and timeliness.

Long-Term Disability Evaluations

Long-term disability evaluations are required when a mental health condition is expected to result in an extended or permanent limitation on an individual’s capacity to work. Scholar’s practitioners conduct thorough, evidence-based evaluations that assess the nature, severity, and functional impact of the condition — providing the comprehensive clinical documentation required by long-term disability insurers and relevant agencies.

Return to Work Certifications

Returning to work after a period of mental health-related leave is a significant transition — one that requires both clinical readiness and professional documentation. Scholar provides return to work certifications for individuals who have completed their leave and are preparing to re-enter the workplace — ensuring that the transition is clinically supported, professionally documented, and handled with the care it deserves.

"You belong in every room you enter β€” and you deserve to be there on terms that honor who you are and what you need to thrive."
